As a young boy, I was pretty much clueless about my future. It went on that way till I met a teacher who changed me. Enter, Mr Goh Chee Meng.
When he started teaching us in 2003, we could immediately sense the uprooted passion and sincerity he had in delivering his lessons. His methods of delivering were simply unique and entertaining; it made all of us change the perception we had of English being a dull and boring subject. I, for one, found myself going the extra mile to improve my English standards. Every week after school, I would sit down with him to discuss schoolwork and get him to relate his teaching experiences to me. Just like Desdemona’s famous quote in Shakespeare’s Othello, “I fell in love with your stories” I never got sick of listening to his experiences.
Mr Goh also had a commendable way of dealing with problematic students. Contrary to the hard approach others use, he would easily get students to listen to him and respect him by using the soft approach, only resorting to shouting and punishment if necessary. He showed me the professional way of dealing with students.
I still remember the nadir of my secondary school life when Mr Goh announced that he would be leaving the teaching industry to pursue his studies. The stereotypical barriers of a boy came crashing down as I ended up sobbing badly. It was only then I realized how much of an impact and an influence he was in my life. Such was the beauty of being a teacher, and from that moment on, I told myself I would grow up to be somebody just like him. I now know what I want in life. A teacher, an educator, a source of inspiration. Thank you, Mr Goh.
